Skin Type Guide

How do I know what skin type I have? Which products are best for me?

Dry Skin

You may feel like you have a tightness in your skin; especially after contact with water (showering, swimming, even just washing your face). You might also have patches where the skin has a scaly appearance and easily flakes off. Those with dry skin generally have almost invisible pores and may also experience premature wrinkles and regular irritation to the skin.

When you use traditional creams, it sits on the surface of your skin with minimal penetration and feels greasy to the touch.

The importance of Moisturizer for Dry Skin

Dry skinned people are at highest risk for premature wrinkles and the deepest fine lines. Finding a moisturizer that helps your skin replenish its vibrancy and elasticity is essential. It’s important to keep up with a regular regimen of skin care with gentle products made up of natural ingredients, like those of Hapa Glow Co.

Renewal Ox Balm or Renewal Ox Whip

Lemon contains astringent and detoxifying properties which are helpful in removing dead skin cells, brightening the complexion, and reversing sun damage. These same properties rejuvenate dry, rough, sagging, and tired-looking skin. The antiseptic properties treat pimples and reduce excessive oil in the pores.

Delicate Ox Whip

Lavender contains antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that help skin to heal while fighting and preventing further infection. These properties also reduce redness, blotchy patches, and acne scarring. It is great for soothing and healing skin that’s irritated, wounded, burned, reddened from the sun, insect bites, or bacteria.

Boar Bristle Brush (external link)

Boar bristles carry sebum, the oil naturally produced by your skin. The brush cleans out pores, increases blood flow, and sloughs off dead skin; helping to revitalize dull skin, increasing lymphatic drainage, and rid your face of toxins. This is essential to renewing dry skin as well as improving and preventing wrinkles.

Oily Skin

Oily skin is the result of both genetic factors and hormonal changes. When the body experiences a fluctuation in hormone levels, it signals the production of androgens, a male hormone present in both men and women. Androgens stimulate an increase in sebum production, but when an excess of this oil is produced, it can expand the size of the skin’s pores and result in blockages that become pimples and other acne blemishes.

Oily skin is more prone to acne breakouts and may feature a whole combination of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, etc. Your pores may be more visible because of their size expansion, and your skin may appear greasy throughout the day. If you wear makeup, you probably experience it sliding off easily when touched.

The importance of Moisturizer for Oily Skin

You may assume you don’t need moisturizer, but forgoing moisturizer will actually make the skin even oilier. Skipping moisturizer to dry out your face can actually signal the oil glands underneath the skin to start producing and pumping out more sebum, resulting in a worsened oily condition. Another important step: do your best to refrain from over-cleansing. Try to go a couple days a week where you only cleanse your face at night.

Acne Fighter Ox Whip

Tea Tree contains antiseptic properties that contribute to its ability to combat oily skin while the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make it useful in relieving redness and the discomfort of itchy, irritated, and/or inflamed skin. Tea tree is an oil often used to treat more serious conditions like eczema, cystic acne, rosacea, and psoriasis. Peppermint contains omega 3 fatty acids: calcium, vitamins A and C, and is a natural source of menthol. Menthol can contribute to waking up dull and tired skin while controlling the secretion of excess oil and preventing the clogging of pores. This can lessen the probability of an acne breakout. Castor oil has powerful anti-bacterial properties, making it helpful in the soothing and healing of serious skin conditions. It has a unique ability to penetrate into the skin and boost production of collagen, which softens, hydrates, and improves the elasticity of the skin.

The whipped texture is fluffy and much like an airy cake batter consistency, making it buildable and easy to use as spot treatment.

Witch Hazel Toner (external link)

Alcohol-free witch hazel has anti-irritant and astringent properties. It pulls up and dries out oil and dirt from the pores while soothing irritated skin, acting as an anti-inflammatory, and having antioxidant properties. This is best used by spritzing onto a dry, clean face before applying moisturizer. I absolutely SWEAR by this product.

Combination Skin

Combination skin features two or more different skin types on the face: dry and flaky skin on portions of the face, with excessive oil on others. Many mistakenly believe they have oily skin when they actually have combination skin type.

Combination skin is the most common skin type, but it can be hard to identify and treat. The skin will often be shiny in the T-zone, which includes the forehead, nose, and chin. These areas tend to have more active oil glands than other parts of the face like the cheeks.

The importance of Moisturizer for Combination Skin

If you have combination skin, you have probably experienced chemically based treatments can actually dry out the dry areas of your face and cause the oily areas to increase in oil production. Exfoliating and moisturizing is essential for those with combination skin. Dead skin cells on the dry part of the face will be sloughed off, while clogged pores will be unblocked and cleared, and the entire face can be moisturized with amounts that fit your needs.

 Boar Bristle Brush (external link)

Boar bristles carry sebum, the oil naturally produced by your skin and is effective in redistributing distributing your natural oils to the entire surface. The brush cleans out pores, increases blood flow, and sloughs off dead skin; helping to revitalize dull skin, increasing lymphatic drainage, and rid your face of toxins.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin types may exhibit the characteristics of dry skin, oily skin, or combination skin, but they also deal with a great amount of redness and irritation. Sensitive skin is easily inflamed, so it’s important to choose the right natural skin care for sensitive skin to avoid any adverse reactions. If you have sensitive skin, I am sure you already know this: always, always, always perform a spot test on a small patch of skin before using it all over.

The importance of Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is even more vulnerable to the elements and will benefit from a proper skin-care schedule. It's beneficial to moisturize both morning and night to protect skin from water loss and to maintain a healthy barrier from the daily environmental factors, including pollution and wind.
